New Anbernic RG503 Retro gaming handheld console, 5" OLED VITA display, 256GB Plug & play custom OS, 50+ systems

An OLED widescreen format device from Anbernic, and one of the most popular items recently released. The RG503 is a very capable and ergonomic system with a large, almost 5" OLED VITA display, the RG503 uses the same display as that of the PS Vita and has an upgraded RK3566 processor chip, this is a good upgrade from the older rk3326 chip that powers the Anbernic 351P/M/MP and other similar systems from powkiddy. 

We would classify this unit as a great widescreen PSP or GBA replacement due to its design, it has everything needed to be used as a good alternative to those systems due to its beautiful, sharp and colorful OLED display.

Updated as of 10/30/22 with the 64bit version of a Batocera fork/variation which improves performance of many newer systems and supporting over 50 systems and 27,000+ titles, the new RK3566 chip will allow you to play newer systems such as PSP, N64, DC, NDS, Naomi, Mame, and more at a higher frame rate than the older generation, the difference between the rk3566 and rk3326 chip is very obvious when playing these systems, gameplay and frame rates are also much better compared to the rk3326 chip handhelds, estimated at about 25-50% improvement depending on specific games or systems. 

Battery life is also very good on this unit, running at 50% brightness and playing various systems we got about 6-7 hours of playtime with this console through multiple sessions, it exceeds the expectations of a 3500 mAh size battery.

 

Another noticeable upgrade to the system is the new OLED display which is the same display that has been used on the PS Vita handhelds, for those who are familiar with this display will notice that it is very vibrant and it has accurate color, sharpness, saturation, and contrast. Playing 3D games on the OLED screen will be noticeably much improved compared to the older 640 x 480 or lower resolutions, the addition of Bluetooth is also much welcomed, this will enable you to connect your Bluetooth controller, and the HDMI output is also a great addition which allows you to connect to a TV or monitor (you'll need a mini HDMI adapter).

This handheld also has a very ergonomic feel with a molded handgrip design which is easier to hold and also has a backplate with a rough surface design to prevent slipping, in addition to this design it is noticeably easier to press the trigger buttons as well as the L2 and R2 buttons are slightly elevated, the joysticks are also low profile and the d-pad and analog buttons are also very responsive, overall comfortable to use.

The weight of this handheld is surprisingly light due to the shell casing being made out of plastic material, when holding the handheld it has a premium feel and a very durable design.

The dual speakers on the bottom left and right corners are also very loud and clear, very similar to the other Anbernic devices in quality and sound.

As usual, we like to optimize the cooling so we installed copper heatsinks on the CPU and RAM chips for more efficient cooling, this is ideal for preventing overheating and heat throttling which can decrease frame rates during gameplay.

The system includes a 256GB Samsung or SanDisk card which has been curated and pre-configured for you and does not require any further tinkering and saving you countless hours of labor and trial and error testing, maybe even sleepless nights, there may be a few systems like Mame or N64 which usually do require selection of specific emulators for specific titles which may not be compatible with the default emulator, instructions on how to do this are provided.

 

A new feature has also been added for moonlight support if you have games installed on a PC you will be able to stream them onto the device. The following systems are supported with this particular hardware and software: Amiga,

At the moment gameplay has not been fully optimized as the software is very new and usually takes several updates to see improvement, this will be noticeable for N64 which tends to be the most difficult system to emulate, as updates come out we expect this to be addressed.
